The Atlantis submarine in Maui with kids

The submarine is one of the few ways young children can see Maui's reef at 100 feet. Here are the rules, the prices and how to make the morning go smoothly.

Families are among the happiest guests on the Maui Atlantis dive: there is no swimming, the cabin is air-conditioned, and the crew plays to the kids. One family with a 5- and a 7-year-old wrote that the crew went out of their way to make it fun.

The limits are strict, though, and the ladder matters more than the age.

The quick answer

Children must be at least 36 inches (91 cm) tall, infants are not permitted, and under-16s must be with an adult. Child rates apply up to age 12: about 55% off on Viator, or $66 direct at the June 2026 price. Everyone, children included, has to climb down a near-vertical ladder of about 10 steps on their own.

Can kids ride the Atlantis submarine in Maui?

Yes, from 36 inches (91 cm) tall; infants are not permitted, and guests under 16 must dive with an adult.

There is no minimum age beyond the height rule and the no-infants rule, so a tall preschooler can go while a small one cannot. Measure before you book.

Kids tall enough? The dive cancels free up to 24 hours before if plans change.

How much do children pay?

Child rates apply up to age 12: about 55% off the adult price on Viator (around $72), or $66 direct at June 2026 prices.

From 13, children pay the adult price ($160 on Viator, about $144 on the 10% offer until 15 October 2026). See tickets and prices for the full breakdown.

Can young children manage the ladder?

They must: every passenger climbs down a near-vertical ladder of about 10 steps into the sub, and back up, on their own.

Guests call it steep. Practice on a playground ladder if your child is unsure, have them wear closed-toe shoes, and talk it through beforehand: the rule is that each passenger climbs unaided.

What age is best for the submarine?

Any child who meets the 36-inch rule and can sit still for about 45 minutes; guests with 5- and 7-year-olds report a great time.

Younger children love the portholes and the fish; older ones tend to be fascinated by watching the pilot. Teens who want more adventure may prefer an intro scuba dive, which starts at age 10.

Will kids be scared or bored?

Rarely: the crew gives a thorough briefing before the dive, narrates the whole way and keeps it light, and guests describe the cabin as roomy.

Guests mention crews playing music to match the theme. The dive is short enough for most attention spans. If your child is nervous about enclosed spaces, point out the big portholes and the air-conditioning before you board.

What should families bring?

A light jacket for each child, closed-toe shoes, sunscreen and hats for the shuttle boat, and a seasickness remedy if your kids need one.

  • Snacks for before or after: no food or drinks are allowed on the sub
  • A jacket or sweater: the cabin is air-conditioned
  • Closed-toe shoes for the ladder
  • Sunscreen and hats for the open boat
  • Arrive 30 minutes early for check-in

What if your child is under 36 inches?

They cannot dive, so split the party: one adult dives with the older children while the other stays ashore with the little one.

Most snorkel boats are no help either: the Lanai rafts take no children under 4. In whale season, a two-hour whale watch from the same harbor can be the family outing instead; check that tour's own age rules when you book.

Old enough and tall enough? Pick a morning dive and keep free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

What can older kids do instead, or as well?

From age 10, an intro scuba dive; from 8, the small-group Molokini and turtles raft.

The intro scuba dive ($158) needs PADI eLearning finished before the day, the ability to swim, and no flying for 18 hours afterwards. The Calypso Molokini cruise has a glass-bottom viewing room and slides for kids who are not ready to snorkel far.
